Basel Monday Walkers

I have to say, having Basel as a home base is a beautiful thing! Not only are we in the middle of Central Europe but I can get to the railway system in 10 minutes and to the airport in less than 20! The adventure lifestyle couldn't be more accessible. A step beyond that is all that Basel, Switzerland has to offer!

I've been working hard on 2019 travel planning and trying to make my way through all of the photos from 2018. As a trailing spouse with a passion for travel and photography, this has kept me busier than anticipated! Thankfully there are welcome breaks from staring at a computer screen, and one of my favorites right now is joining the Basel Walkers! This fantastic group tends to hold a consistent Monday walk regardless of the weather conditions. For those walkers wanting adventures outside of the Basel-Land area on Wednesdays! There are so many small villages in the Basel canton and the history dates back many centuries. This rich charm makes the introduction to each town so wonderful.

While I've only been able to take part in five or six walks thus far, I'm a huge fan of this awesome group! Everyone is super friendly and enjoy an excellent 10K walk on a Monday morning to start the week! We typically start in a Basel-Land village and then walk the expertly marked Swiss hiking trails. We hike through a couple of towns, led by rotating volunteers, and through the beautiful farmland that overlooks the city of Basel and most often end at a cafe for coffee! Most recently I was able to join in on the annual Christmas walk with around 25 Monday Walkers trekking along a riverbank and ending in a German village for a hot meal. As an expat who tends to stay busy on his computer or an adventure, this is an excellent way to spend 4 hours on a Monday morning! Making new friends, seeing the many beautiful treks in Basel-Land, and getting out of the home office is a lovely thing!

Many Basel residents have the annual U-Abo pass granting them unlimited access to public transportation, including SBB trains that have Basel-Land stations. If you are in Basel, have the U-Abo pass, and desire beautiful walks with English speaking residents, check out the Facebook Group! Even if you don’t have the U-Abo pass, the tickets are not expensive and you’ll certainly enjoy the walk.
