The Lemons of the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is so much more than beautiful villages along the coastline! This region is famous for its lemon crop. The Amalfi lemons are different than every other lemon you’ll find at the market. They are often two to three times larger and are entirely edible! They have a far more tolerable level of sour level, and it’s one of the main components of the local cuisine.

Since it’s such a big piece of the Amalfi culture, I wanted to learn more. I also love the occasional Limoncello, so any excuse to learn about culture with a drink in hand is fine by me! Before our visit, I jumped on Airbnb and took a look into the experiences they offer. We found two that were perfect and easy to get to!

Valenti Limoncello in Positano

Our First Stop…

If you are in this region and don’t sample the Limoncello, you are doing yourself an injustice. This stuff is yummy and such a great tradition of the area. It’s made, chemical free, from lemon rinds, alcohol, water, and sugar. It’s fresh and fabulous!

We reserved a visit for an hour at Valenti via Airbnb Experiences where we toured the lower garden, sampled Lemoncello, and were able to taste many of the other food-related items they offer. It’s fascinating to hear their process in making Limoncello and excellent to know that every bit is used or composted.

It’s super easy to ship things from there, so we were sure to buy some Lemoncello, Lemon Jam, Olive Oil, and their Hazelnut Spread, all of which are amazing!

Amalfi Lemon Experience

Our Second Stop…

In just half an hour you can reach Amalfi from Positano via the Postano Jet Boat, or you can take a little longer and ride the bus. The bus is much cheaper, but I recommend the ferry at least once because it’s a smooth and refreshing ride with beautiful panoramic coastline views!

We booked a visit to the Amalfi Lemon Experience on Airbnb. I didn’t really know what to expect, but with the reputation of the lemons, I wanted to learn more! This proved to be a beautiful day in Amalfi, and we learned so much about local agriculture.

We toured the lemon gardens, were educated on their processes, and we able to get a lot of great pictures. The views were beautiful from the gardens, and as expected, it smelled of fresh lemon. After a vertical walk through the gardens, we learned about their Lemoncello production processes and were able to sample delicious lemonade, fresh lemon cake, and of course, their limoncello.

At my time of booking, this was just 29€ per person, which was an absolute bargain. This could have easily been 10-15€ higher and been worth the visit. I actually left a bit sad because it seems the younger population it trending towards tourism and there is less and less lemon growth as time passes.
